Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, minced garlic, olive oil, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to create the marinade.
- Add the sliced lamb or chicken to the marinade, ensuring each piece is well-coated. Cover and let it marinate in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour, or overnight for more intense flavor.
- Preheat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Once hot, cook the marinated meat for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until fully cooked through and slightly charred on the edges.
- Remove the meat from the grill and allow it to rest for a few minutes before slicing it into thin strips.
- While the meat is resting, warm the pita bread on the grill or in a toaster until soft and pliable.
- To assemble your gyro plate, spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce on each piece of warm pita bread.
- Top with the sliced meat, followed by diced tomatoes, thinly sliced red onion, cucumber slices, and a handful of chopped lettuce.
- Serve the Greek gyro plate with extra tzatziki sauce on the side for dipping.
- Enjoy this delicious, homemade Greek dish!
Tips
- For a vegetarian option, substitute the meat with grilled eggplant or mushrooms.
- Feel free to add additional toppings like feta cheese or olives for extra flavor.
- Marinating the meat overnight will yield the best flavor and tenderness.
