Green Bean and Cheddar Casserole

This creamy and cheesy green bean casserole is not just a side dish, but a delightful centerpiece for any gathering. With tender green beans enveloped in a rich cheddar cheese sauce, topped with crispy breadcrumbs, this dish brings comfort and nostalgia to the table. Originating from the mid-20th century, this casserole became a staple in American households, especially during holiday feasts. It's an easy yet impressive way to enjoy vegetables, ensuring that everyone at the table will come back for seconds!

Serves 6

Ingredients

Fresh green beans
1 pound, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces
Unsalted butter
2 tablespoons
Onion
1 medium, diced
All-purpose flour
2 tablespoons
Milk
1 cup
Shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups
Salt
1 teaspoon, or to taste
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
Breadcrumbs
1 cup, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the trimmed green beans and cook for 5 minutes, or until they are crisp-tender. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to form a roux.
  5. Gradually whisk in the milk and continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth. Season the cheese sauce with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Add the cooked green beans to the cheese sauce and gently toss to coat the beans evenly.
  8. Transfer the green bean and cheese mixture to a greased casserole dish and sprinkle the breadcrumbs evenly over the top.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbly, and the breadcrumbs are golden brown.
  10. Serve hot and enjoy this comforting classic!

Tips

  • 💡 For a spicier twist, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the cheese sauce.
  • 💡 You can substitute half of the cheddar cheese with grated Parmesan for added depth of flavor.
  • 💡 For a healthier version, use low-fat milk and reduced-fat cheese.
