Classic Grilled Ham and Cheese Sandwich with a Fresh Tomato Twist
This is not just an ordinary ham and cheese sandwich. Picture thick slices of smoky ham, rich cheddar cheese, and fresh, juicy tomato slices, all nestled between two perfectly grilled pieces of bread. The buttery crunch of the bread gives way to the warm, gooey cheese, creating a symphony of flavors and textures in your mouth. This sandwich is a nostalgic nod to childhood, with an added grown-up twist.
Servings: 2
Ingredients
- Unsalted butter
- 4 tablespoons, at room temperature
- Fresh, ripe tomato
- 1, sliced
- Cheddar cheese slices
- 4
- Smoked ham slices
- 4
- Bread slices
- 4
Instructions
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Ensure it's hot enough by dropping a small piece of bread on the surface. If it sizzles instantly, the skillet is ready.
- Spread a tablespoon of butter on one side of each bread slice. Make sure to cover the entire surface to ensure an even golden crust.
- Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on the skillet or griddle. Listen for that satisfying sizzle!
- Layer each slice with a slice of ham, a slice of cheddar cheese, and a few tomato slices. The tomato not only adds freshness but helps the cheese melt more evenly.
- Top with the remaining bread slices, buttered side up.
- Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the bottom bread is golden brown. Be patient and resist the urge to peek, as this might tear the bread.
- Flip the sandwiches using a wide spatula and cook for an additional 3-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the other side is golden brown.
- Remove from heat and let cool for a minute before serving. This allows the cheese to set a bit and makes the sandwich easier to cut.
- Cut the sandwiches in half and serve hot. Enjoy the melty goodness!
