Decadent Guava Cream Pastries
These Decadent Guava Cream Pastries are a delightful treat, rich with the tropical sweetness of guava paste and creamy cheese, all encased in a golden, flaky puff pastry. Originating from Cuba, this pastry is a staple in Cuban bakeries and is loved for its simplicity and rich flavor. The perfect accompaniment to a cup of coffee or tea, these pastries will transport your taste buds to the Caribbean.
Ingredients
- Egg
- 1, beaten lightly for egg wash
- Powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup
- Cream cheese
- 8 oz, softened
- Guava paste
- 1 cup, cut into small cubes
- Puff pastry sheets
- 2, thawed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, beat together the softened cream cheese and powdered sugar until smooth and well combined. Set aside.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out one sheet of puff pastry into a 12x12-inch square.
- Spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over the puff pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
- Distribute half of the guava paste cubes evenly over the cream cheese mixture.
- Starting from one side, roll up the puff pastry tightly to form a log.
- Repeat with the second sheet of puff pastry and the remaining cream cheese mixture and guava paste cubes.
- Slice each log into 6 equal pieces and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Brush the tops of the pastries with the beaten egg wash. This will give them a beautiful, golden finish.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastries are golden brown and puffed up.
- Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before serving.
- Serve warm, sprinkled with a little extra powdered sugar for a sweet finish, if desired. Enjoy!
Tips
- If you can't find guava paste, you can substitute it with any other fruit paste of your choice. Strawberry or apricot would work well.
- For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg to the cream cheese mixture.
