Instructions
- Prepare the tzatziki sauce by combining Greek yogurt, lemon juice, minced garlic, and a pinch of salt in a bowl. Mix well and place it in the refrigerator to allow the flavors to meld together.
- Create a marinade for the meat by combining olive oil, dried oregano, salt, and pepper in a separate bowl. Add the thinly sliced lamb or chicken to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Allow the meat to marinate for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator.
- Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Grill the marinated meat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until it's cooked through and has a nice sear.
- Briefly warm the pita bread in a toaster or on the grill until it's soft and pliable.
- Assemble your gyro by spreading a generous amount of the chilled tzatziki sauce onto each warmed pita bread. Add the cooked meat, and top with the thinly sliced red onion, tomato, cucumber, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley.
- Fold the pita bread in half and serve immediately. Enjoy the burst of flavors from this authentic Greek delight!
Tips
- For a vegetarian version, replace the meat with grilled halloumi cheese or roasted vegetables.
- For an extra tangy tzatziki, add a tablespoon of white wine vinegar to the sauce.
- The meat can be marinated overnight for a deeper flavor.
