
Hernekeitto
Hernekeitto is a traditional Finnish split pea soup made with dried peas, pork, and root vegetables.
Ingredients
- Fresh parsley (2 tablespoons, chopped)
- Smoked ham hock (1)
- Bay leaves (2)
- Pepper (1/2 teaspoon)
- Salt (1 teaspoon)
- Potatoes (2, diced)
- Carrots (2, diced)
- Onion (1, chopped)
- Pork shoulder (1 lb, cubed)
- Water (8 cups)
- Dried green split peas (2 cups)
Instructions
- Rinse the dried split peas under cold water and drain.
- In a large pot, combine the split peas, water, pork shoulder, onion, carrots, potatoes, salt, pepper, bay leaves, and smoked ham hock.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for 2 hours, or until the peas are tender and the soup has thickened.
- Remove the bay leaves and smoked ham hock from the pot. Shred the meat from the ham hock and return it to the pot.
- Serve the hernekeitto hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
