Hotteok: Korean Sweet and Savory Pancakes

Hotteok, a popular street dish from the heart of South Korea, will transport your senses to the bustling streets of Seoul. These sweet and savory pancakes offer a delightful contrast of a crispy exterior with a gooey, aromatic filling of brown sugar, cinnamon, and nuts. Traditionally enjoyed during the cold winter months, these warm, comforting pancakes can be enjoyed year-round.

Serves 8

Ingredients

Vegetable oil
2 tablespoons
Mixed nuts (peanuts, walnuts)
1/2 cup, finely chopped
Cinnamon
1 teaspoon
Brown sugar
1/2 cup
Warm water
1 cup
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Sugar
2 tablespoons
Active dry yeast
2 teaspoons
All-purpose flour
2 cups

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, yeast, sugar, and salt.
  2. Gradually pour in the warm water while continuously stirring until a sticky dough is formed.
  3. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  4. While the dough is rising, prepare the filling by mixing together the brown sugar, cinnamon, and chopped nuts in a separate bowl.
  5. Once the dough has risen, divide it into 8 equal portions. Flatten each portion with your hands.
  6. Spoon a generous amount of the brown sugar mixture onto the center of each flattened dough portion.
  7. Gather the edges of the dough and pinch them together to seal the filling inside. This should form a round, filled dough ball.
  8. Heat the vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  9. Carefully place the filled dough balls in the skillet and gently flatten them with a spatula.
  10. Cook the hotteok for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  11. Serve the Hotteok hot, allowing the warm, sweet filling to be fully savored. Enjoy!

Tips

  • 💡 For a variation, try using different kinds of nuts, or even adding in some finely chopped dried fruits into the filling.
  • 💡 Be careful when eating freshly cooked Hotteok, as the filling can be very hot.
