Naan is a beloved Indian flatbread that is soft, fluffy, and slightly charred, making it the perfect accompaniment to rich curries, dal, or simply enjoyed with a dollop of butter. Traditionally baked in a tandoor, naan has been a staple in Indian cuisine for centuries, often served at festive occasions and family gatherings. Its versatility allows for endless variations, including stuffed naan with fillings like cheese, garlic, or even spiced potatoes.

Servings: 6

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
3 cups
Warm water
1 cup
Active dry yeast
2 teaspoons
Sugar
1 teaspoon
Salt
1 teaspoon
Plain yogurt
1/2 cup
Vegetable oil
2 tablespoons
Butter
3 tablespoons, melted
Garlic
3 cloves, minced
Cilantro
1/4 cup, chopped

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes, or until it becomes foamy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, yogurt, and vegetable oil.
  3. Mix the ingredients with your hands or a wooden spoon until a dough begins to form. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
  6. Punch down the dough to release air. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten into a circle or oval shape, approximately 1/4 inch thick.
  7. Place the rolled naan onto the hot skillet. Cook for about 1 minute, or until bubbles start to form on the surface. Flip the naan and cook for another minute on the other side, until golden brown and slightly charred.
  8. Remove the naan from the skillet and immediately brush it with melted butter. Sprinkle with minced garlic and chopped cilantro for added flavor.
  9. Repeat the cooking process with the remaining dough portions. Serve the naan warm, ideally alongside your favorite curry or dal.
