Traditional Irish Steel-Cut Oatmeal

Experience a taste of Ireland with this hearty and wholesome Traditional Irish Steel-Cut Oatmeal. Steel-cut oats, also known as Irish oats, are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been chopped into pieces. They give this dish a chewier and fuller texture compared to regular oatmeal. Sweetened with a drizzle of honey or brown sugar, and topped with your favorite fresh fruits or nuts, this dish is not only nutritious but also a delight to your taste buds. Ideal for a power-packed breakfast or a cozy brunch.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Water
4 cups
Steel-cut oats
1 cup
Salt
1/4 teaspoon
Milk or Cream
as needed
Brown sugar or Honey
to taste
Fresh fruits or Nuts
to garnish

Instructions

  1. Bring 4 cups of water to a rolling boil in a large pot.
  2. Once the water is boiling, stir in the steel-cut oats and salt.
  3. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and allow the oats to simmer. Cook for about 20-30 minutes, until the oats are tender and have absorbed most of the water.
  4. Give the oatmeal a good stir before serving. If you prefer a creamier texture, add some milk or cream.
  5. Sweeten your oatmeal with some brown sugar or honey to taste.
  6. Top off your oatmeal with a selection of your favorite fresh fruits or nuts. Serve hot and enjoy!

Tips

  • 💡 For a creamier oatmeal, you can cook the oats in milk instead of water. Additionally, you can add some spices like cinnamon or nutmeg for a flavor twist. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and reheated in the microwave with a splash of milk.
