All-purpose flour
4 cups
Buttermilk
1 3/4 cups
Baking soda
1 teaspoon
Salt
1 teaspoon
Butter
2 tablespoons, melted (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently with a wooden spoon or your hands until a sticky dough forms. Be careful not to overmix, as this can lead to a dense loaf.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead it lightly for about 1 minute, just until it comes together.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
  6. Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on top of the loaf. This helps the bread to cook evenly and gives it a classic appearance.
  7. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  8. If desired, brush the top of the loaf with melted butter immediately after baking for a richer flavor.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack before slicing and serving.
