Japanese Yakitori Chicken Wraps
Indulge in the savory delight of Japanese Yakitori Chicken Wraps, where succulent grilled chicken skewers meet fresh, vibrant vegetables, all enveloped in a soft tortilla. This dish is inspired by the traditional Japanese street food, yakitori, which means 'grilled chicken' in Japanese. Typically enjoyed at izakayas, these wraps bring the essence of Japanese cuisine right to your table, offering a perfect blend of smoky, sweet, and umami flavors. They're perfect for a quick lunch or a fun dinner party!
Ingredients
- Chicken breast
- 1 pound, cut into bite-sized pieces
- Soy sauce
- 1/4 cup
- Mirin
- 2 tablespoons
- Sake
- 2 tablespoons
- Brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon
- Garlic
- 2 cloves, minced
- Ginger
- 1 tablespoon, grated
- Vegetable oil
- 1 tablespoon, plus more for brushing
- Tortillas
- 4 large, soft tortillas
- Bell peppers
- 1 cup, sliced (any color)
- Red onion
- 1/2 cup, thinly sliced
- Green onions
- 1/4 cup, sliced
- Sesame seeds
- 2 tablespoons, toasted
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, mirin, sake, brown sugar, minced garlic, and grated ginger to create a flavorful marinade.
- Add the chicken pieces to the marinade, ensuring they are well-coated. Cover and let marinate for at least 15 minutes, or up to 2 hours for more enhanced flavor.
- Preheat your grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. If using wooden skewers, soak them in water for 30 minutes to prevent burning.
- Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the skewers. Lightly brush them with vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
- Grill the chicken skewers for about 8-10 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are cooked through and have a nice char.
- Carefully remove the chicken from the skewers and set aside.
- Warm the tortillas on the grill or in a pan until they are pliable.
- To assemble the wraps, place a tortilla on a flat surface. Layer with several slices of grilled chicken, bell peppers, and red onion.
- Drizzle some of the remaining marinade over the filling for an added burst of flavor.
- Sprinkle with sliced green onions and toasted sesame seeds for garnish.
- Fold the sides of the tortilla over the filling and roll it up tightly to encase the delicious ingredients.
- Repeat the process with the remaining tortillas and filling.
- Serve the Yakitori Chicken Wraps warm, and enjoy the delightful fusion of flavors!
Tips
- For a spicier kick, add sliced jalapeños to the filling or mix some sriracha into the marinade.
- Feel free to substitute the chicken with tofu or shrimp for a different protein option.
- You can add other vegetables such as cucumbers or lettuce for added crunch.
