Ingredients

Original recipe serves 4

Basmati Rice
1 cup
Cumin Seeds
2 teaspoons
Ghee or Butter
2 tablespoons
Water
2 cups
Salt
1 teaspoon or to taste
Fresh Cilantro
for garnish

Instructions

  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold running water until the water runs clear. This step helps to remove the excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming sticky.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt the ghee or butter over medium heat. Once melted, add the cumin seeds.
  3. Cook the cumin seeds until they start to sizzle and release a fragrant aroma. This process of toasting the cumin seeds enriches the flavor of the rice.
  4. Add the rinsed basmati rice to the saucepan. Stir and sauté for 2-3 minutes to allow the rice to absorb the flavors from the cumin and ghee or butter.
  5. Pour in the water and add the salt. Stir well and bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.
  6. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let the rice simmer for about 15-20 minutes. During this time, the rice will absorb the water and become tender.
  7. Turn off the heat and let the rice sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the rice to steam and become fluffy.
  8. Before serving, fluff the rice with a fork to separate the grains and garnish with fresh cilantro. Enjoy your Aromatic Jeera Rice as a side dish with your favorite Indian curry or dal.
