Khao Tom

Khao Tom is a warm and nourishing Thai rice soup that embodies comfort in every spoonful. This delightful dish is perfect for any time of day, whether you need a soothing breakfast or a light dinner. The fragrant jasmine rice simmers in a savory chicken broth, infused with aromatic ginger and garlic, creating a rich base that is further enhanced by tender shredded chicken. Topped with fresh herbs, a squeeze of lime, and a touch of umami from fish and soy sauce, Khao Tom is a culinary hug that warms the soul. This traditional dish has roots in Thai culture, often enjoyed during times of sickness or as a gentle meal for loved ones.

Serves 4

Ingredients

Jasmine rice
1 cup
Chicken breast
1 cup, cooked and shredded
Chicken broth
6 cups
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Ginger
1-inch piece, sliced
Fish sauce
2 tablespoons
Soy sauce
1 tablespoon
Lime
1, cut into wedges
Cilantro
1/4 cup, chopped
Green onions
1/4 cup, chopped

Instructions

  1. Rinse the jasmine rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Drain well to remove excess starch.
  2. In a large pot, bring the chicken broth to a boil over medium heat.
  3. Add the rinsed jasmine rice, sliced ginger, and minced garlic to the pot. Reduce the heat to low and allow it to simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and cooked through.
  4. Stir in the shredded chicken, fish sauce, and soy sauce, cooking for an additional 5 minutes to heat everything through and meld the flavors.
  5. Remove the slices of ginger from the soup before serving.
  6. Ladle the Khao Tom into bowls and garnish with chopped green onions, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime juice for brightness.
  7. Enjoy your comforting bowl of Khao Tom hot!
