Lok Lak
Lok Lak is a beloved Cambodian dish that tantalizes the taste buds with its succulent marinated beef and vibrant, fresh toppings. Traditionally served over a bed of crisp lettuce, this dish is not only a feast for the eyes but also a delight to the palate. The tangy lime dipping sauce adds a zesty kick that perfectly complements the rich flavors of the beef. This dish has its roots in the French colonial era, where it was influenced by French cooking techniques while incorporating local Cambodian ingredients, making it a true fusion of cultures.
Servings: 4
Ingredients
- Beef sirloin (1 pound, thinly sliced)
- Garlic (3 cloves, minced)
- Soy sauce (2 tablespoons)
- Oyster sauce (1 tablespoon)
- Fish sauce (1 tablespoon)
- Sugar (1 teaspoon)
- Black pepper (1/2 teaspoon, freshly ground)
- Vegetable oil (2 tablespoons)
- Lettuce leaves (4-6, for serving)
- Tomato (1, sliced)
- Cucumber (1, sliced)
- Red onion (1 small, thinly sliced)
- Fresh cilantro (1/4 cup, for garnish)
- Lime juice (2 tablespoons)
- Water (1 tablespoon)
- Salt (1/4 teaspoon)
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the minced garlic, soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, sugar, and black pepper. Mix well to create a marinade.
- Add the sliced beef to the marinade and toss to coat. Cover and let it marinate for at least 15 minutes, allowing the flavors to penetrate the meat.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over high heat. Once hot, add the marinated beef in a single layer. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until browned and cooked to your desired doneness. Remove from heat and let rest.
- While the beef is resting, prepare the dipping sauce by mixing together the lime juice, water, and salt in a small bowl. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
- To serve, place a generous amount of cooked beef on a bed of lettuce leaves on each plate. Garnish with sliced tomato, cucumber, red onion, and fresh cilantro.
- Serve the Lok Lak with the tangy lime dipping sauce on the side for drizzling or dipping.
- Enjoy your delicious Lok Lak!
