Mai Tai Cocktail

Transport yourself to a tropical paradise with this vibrant Mai Tai cocktail! This classic drink combines the rich flavors of aged rums, zesty lime juice, and the sweet, nutty essence of orgeat syrup, creating a refreshing and balanced sip that's perfect for warm weather gatherings. Originating in the 1940s from a California tiki bar, the Mai Tai has become a symbol of the tiki culture, embodying the spirit of relaxation and fun. Whether you're lounging by the pool or hosting a backyard barbecue, this cocktail is sure to impress your guests!

Serves 1

Ingredients

Light rum
1 ounce
Dark rum
1 ounce
Lime juice
3/4 ounce, freshly squeezed
Orange liqueur
1/2 ounce
Orgeat syrup
1/2 ounce
Ice
as needed
Lime wheel
for garnish
Mint sprig
for garnish

Instructions

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice to chill the mix.
  2. Pour in the light rum, dark rum, freshly squeezed lime juice, orange liqueur, and orgeat syrup.
  3. Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker is frosty, which usually takes about 15 seconds.
  4. Strain the mixture into a glass filled with fresh ice, preferably crushed ice for that classic tiki presentation.
  5. Garnish with a sprig of fresh mint and a lime wheel to add a pop of color and fragrance.

Tips

  • 💡 For a twist on the traditional Mai Tai, try adding a splash of pineapple juice or using flavored rums such as coconut or spiced rum.
  • 💡 If you prefer a less sweet cocktail, reduce the amount of orgeat syrup, or even substitute with simple syrup or agave nectar.
