Manjuu are delectable Japanese sweet dumplings that are as delightful to make as they are to eat. Traditionally filled with sweet red bean paste or velvety sweet potato paste, these soft, pillowy treats are steamed to perfection, creating a delicate texture that melts in your mouth. Originating from Japan, these treats have been enjoyed for centuries, often served during tea ceremonies or festivals. Dust them with matcha powder for an extra layer of flavor and a touch of elegance.

Servings: 12

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
2 cups
Baking powder
1 teaspoon
Sugar
1/4 cup
Salt
1/4 teaspoon
Vegetable oil
2 tablespoons
Water
3/4 cup
Red bean paste
1 cup
Sweet potato paste
1 cup
Matcha powder
for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt, mixing well to ensure even distribution.
  2. Add the vegetable oil and water to the dry ingredients. Stir until a soft dough begins to form.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions, shaping each into a ball.
  5. Take one portion of dough and flatten it into a disc using your hands. Place a spoonful of red bean paste or sweet potato paste in the center of the disc.
  6. Carefully gather the edges of the dough around the filling and pinch them together to seal. Roll it into a smooth ball.
  7. Repeat the process with the remaining dough portions and fillings, ensuring a mix of both sweet potato and red bean varieties for a colorful presentation.
  8. Prepare your steamer by lining it with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Place the manjuu in the steamer, making sure they are not touching.
  9. Steam the manjuu for about 15-20 minutes, or until the dough is translucent and cooked through.
  10. Once steamed, remove them from the steamer and let them cool slightly before serving.
  11. Optional: Dust the cooled manjuu with matcha powder for a beautiful finish and added flavor.
