Indulge in the comfort of homemade creamy mashed potatoes blanketed by a rich and savory gravy. This classic duo, with its origins in the British cuisine, is a staple at any holiday table and brings warmth to daily meals. The velvety potatoes paired with the heartwarming gravy creates a symphony of flavors that will leave you feeling satisfied and content.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Potatoes
2 pounds, peeled and cubed
Unsalted butter
1/2 cup (1 stick), divided
Milk
1 cup, warmed
Salt
1 teaspoon, or to taste
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
All-purpose flour
2 tablespoons
Beef broth
2 cups

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, cover the peeled and cubed potatoes with water and bring to a boil over high heat.
  2. Reduce the heat to medium and simmer until the potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork, about 20 minutes.
  3. Drain the potatoes and return them to the warm pot. Add 1/4 cup of unsalted butter, warmed milk, salt, and pepper. Mash until smooth and creamy.
  4. To prepare the gravy, melt the remaining 1/4 cup of butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Slowly whisk in the beef broth and continue to cook and stir until the gravy thickens and comes to a simmer, about 5 minutes.
  6. Taste and adjust the seasoning of the gravy with additional salt and pepper if needed.
  7. Serve the creamy mashed potatoes with the rich, savory gravy poured over the top. Enjoy this comforting classic as is, or add your favorite mix-ins like roasted garlic or shredded cheese to the potatoes for a twist.
