Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined.
- Shape the meat mixture into 1-inch diameter meatballs and place them on a baking sheet.
- Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.
- While the meatballs are baking, heat the marinara sauce in a saucepan over medium heat.
- When the meatballs are ready, add them to the marinara sauce and allow them to simmer for 10 minutes. This will help the meatballs absorb the flavours of the sauce.
- Slice the sub rolls lengthwise, creating a pocket but not cutting all the way through.
- Fill the sub rolls with the meatballs and marinara sauce, ensuring every bite will have a meatball.
- Top the meatballs with the shredded mozzarella cheese.
- Return the sub rolls to the oven and bake for an additional 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Garnish each meatball sub with fresh basil leaves for a burst of freshness before serving.
Tips
- For a spicier kick, add some red pepper flakes to the meatball mixture or the marinara sauce.
- If you have time, let the meatballs simmer in the marinara sauce for longer. The more time they have to soak in the sauce, the more flavorful they will be.
- For an extra cheesy sandwich, add some grated Parmesan cheese on top of the mozzarella before baking.
