Memphis Style Barbecue Sauce

Immerse yourself in the rich culinary tradition of the American South with this Memphis-style barbecue sauce. With its perfect balance of tangy, sweet, and spicy flavors, this sauce will elevate your grilling experience. It is the ideal accompaniment for ribs, pulled pork, or grilled chicken, infusing them with the authentic taste of Memphis barbecue.

Ingredients

Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
Cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon
Onion powder
1 teaspoon
Garlic powder
1 teaspoon
Chili powder
1 tablespoon
Paprika
2 tablespoons
Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon
Yellow mustard
1/2 cup
Brown sugar
1/2 cup
Apple cider vinegar
1/2 cup
Ketchup
1 cup

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the ketchup, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce.
  2. Add in the paprika, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  3. Stir the mixture well to ensure the spices are evenly distributed.
  4. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
  5. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low. Let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together and the sauce to thicken.
  6. After simmering, remove the saucepan from the heat. Allow the sauce to cool before using. This helps to further develop the flavors.
  7. Pour any leftover sauce into an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Tips

  • 💡 For a smokier flavor, consider adding 1 teaspoon of liquid smoke.
  • 💡 If you prefer a spicier sauce, increase the amount of cayenne pepper to taste.
  • 💡 This sauce can be used as a marinade before grilling, or brushed on meats during the last few minutes of grilling.
