Servings: 6
Ingredients
- Water
- 4 cups
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Maize meal (cornmeal)
- 2 cups
- Unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons
- Milk
- 1/2 cup (optional for serving)
- Sugar
- to taste (optional for serving)
Instructions
- In a large pot, bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
- Add the salt to the boiling water, stirring to dissolve.
- Gradually add the maize meal to the pot, whisking continuously to prevent lumps from forming.
- Once incorporated, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a lid. Let it simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally to ensure the mieliepap doesn't stick to the bottom.
- After 30 minutes, check the consistency; it should be thick and creamy. If it's too thick, you can add a little more water and stir.
- Remove the pot from heat and stir in the butter until fully melted and combined.
- Serve the mieliepap hot. For breakfast, drizzle with warm milk and sprinkle with sugar. As a side dish, pair it with your favorite meat and gravy.
