This Mongolian easy bread, known as 'boortsog', is a delightful flatbread that has been a staple in Mongolian cuisine for centuries. Traditionally enjoyed alongside hearty stews or as a base for savory toppings, this simple yet flavorful bread is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Its versatility makes it a perfect companion for a variety of dishes, from soups to grilled meats. With just a few basic ingredients, you can create a warm, comforting bread that brings the essence of Mongolia into your home.

Servings: 6

Ingredients

All-purpose flour
3 cups
Baking powder
1 tablespoon
Salt
1 teaspoon
Water
1 cup, warm
Vegetable oil
for brushing and cooking

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well to ensure the baking powder is evenly distributed.
  2. Gradually add warm water to the dry mixture while stirring with a spoon or your hands. Continue adding water until the dough begins to come together.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle a bit more flour as needed.
  4. Divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball. Cover with a clean towel to prevent drying.
  5. Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Brush it lightly with vegetable oil to prevent sticking.
  6. Roll out each dough ball into a thin circle, approximately 6 inches in diameter. Keep the other dough balls covered while you roll out each piece.
  7. Place the rolled dough onto the heated skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown spots appear. Adjust the heat as necessary to avoid burning.
  8. Remove the bread from the skillet and repeat the process with the remaining dough portions.
  9. Serve the Mongolian easy bread warm, ideally with a side of hearty soup, grilled meats, or even as a base for toppings like yogurt or honey.
