Mostarda di Frutta is a delightful Italian condiment that marries the sweetness of candied fruits with the zesty kick of mustard, offering a unique flavor profile that elevates any dish. Originating from the northern regions of Italy, particularly Lombardy, this sweet and spicy preserve has been a cherished staple since the Middle Ages, originally crafted as a means to preserve fruit and enhance the flavors of savory meats and robust cheeses. Its vibrant colors and tantalizing taste make it a perfect addition to festive gatherings, charcuterie boards, or simply as a gourmet treat to enjoy with friends and family.

Servings: 16 (about 2 tablespoons per serving)

Ingredients

Mixed fruit
4 cups, chopped (such as pears, cherries, apricots, and figs)
Granulated sugar
2 cups
Lemon juice
1/4 cup, freshly squeezed
White wine
1 cup
Mustard powder
1/4 cup
Salt
1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the chopped mixed fruit with granulated sugar. Toss to coat the fruit evenly and let it sit for 24 hours to draw out the juices.
  2. After 24 hours, transfer the fruit and sugar mixture to a large pot. Add the white wine, lemon juice, and salt. Stir well and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and cook for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the fruit is tender and the syrup has thickened to a syrupy consistency.
  4. Stir in the mustard powder, mixing thoroughly, and continue to cook for an additional 10 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  5. Remove the pot from heat and allow the mostarda to cool to room temperature.
  6. Transfer the cooled mostarda into sterilized jars, sealing them tightly. Store in a cool, dark place for at least one week before using to allow the flavors to develop fully.
