Creamy Mushroom and Spinach Gratin
Experience the rich, savory goodness of this Creamy Mushroom and Spinach Gratin. This luxurious side dish, with its golden, bubbly top and a delectable mix of earthy mushrooms and fresh spinach coated in a creamy, cheesy sauce, will elevate any meal. Originating from the French cuisine, 'Gratin' is a widespread culinary technique in which an ingredient is topped with a browned crust, often using breadcrumbs, grated cheese, or butter. Our version gives a nod to this tradition, adding a creamy twist to the classic.
Ingredients
- Salt and pepper
- to taste
- Breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup
- Parmesan cheese
- 1 cup, grated
- Milk
- 1 cup
- All-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons
- Garlic
- 2 cloves, minced
- Butter
- 2 tablespoons
- Spinach
- 2 cups, fresh
- Mushrooms
- 2 cups, sliced
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the mushrooms turn tender and have a golden color, which should take about 5 minutes.
- Add the fresh spinach to the skillet and continue to cook until the spinach has wilted, approximately 2 minutes.
- Evenly sprinkle the all-purpose flour over the mushroom and spinach mixture, stirring it in to coat the vegetables.
- Gradually pour in the milk, stirring the mixture continuously, until it becomes thick and creamy.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and stir in half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Season with salt and pepper according to your taste preference.
- Transfer the creamy mixture into a baking dish. Evenly sprinkle the rest of the Parmesan cheese and breadcrumbs over the top.
- Bake the gratin in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until you see that the top has turned golden and is bubbling. The gratin is now ready to serve.
- Serve this Creamy Mushroom and Spinach Gratin hot, as a perfect side dish to complement any meal. Enjoy!
Tips
- For an extra cheesy gratin, feel free to use a blend of different cheeses like Gruyère or Mozzarella along with Parmesan.
- You can add a touch of nutmeg for extra depth of flavor.
- You can substitute half of the milk with cream for a richer gratin.
