Mutton Dalcha

Indulge in the aromatic and savory Mutton Dalcha, a staple dish from the Indian subcontinent. Mutton Dalcha, a flavorful stew, combines tender mutton pieces and protein-rich chana dal (chickpea lentils), simmered in a rich, spiced tomato sauce. The medley of spices brings a burst of flavors that make this dish a heartwarming delight, perfect for a family feast or a festive occasion.

Ingredients

Coriander leaves
a handful, finely chopped
Garam masala powder
1 teaspoon
Red chili powder
1 teaspoon
Tomatoes
2 large, finely chopped
Ginger garlic paste
1 tablespoon
Onions
2 medium, finely chopped
Oil
2 tablespoons
Salt
to taste
Turmeric powder
1/2 teaspoon
Chana dal (chickpea lentils)
1 cup
Mutton
500 grams, bone-in, cut into pieces

Instructions

  1. Rinse the mutton and chana dal under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. Transfer the mutton and chana dal to a pressure cooker. Add turmeric powder, salt, and sufficient water to cover the ingredients. Pressure cook for 4-5 whistles or until the mutton is cooked and tender.
  3. In a large pan, heat oil over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until they turn a golden brown color.
  4. Add the ginger-garlic paste to the pan and sauté for a few more minutes until the raw smell disappears.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, and garam masala powder to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and the spices are well combined.
  6. Pour the cooked mutton and dal mixture into the pan. Mix well to combine the ingredients and let it simmer for a few minutes until the flavors meld together.
  7. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or naan bread for a complete meal.

Tips

  • 💡 For a vegetarian version, substitute mutton with vegetables like carrots, potatoes, and brinjal (eggplant). Adjust the amount of red chili powder to suit your spice preference.
