Nanxiang Steamed Bun (Xiaolongbao)
Transport yourself to the bustling streets of Shanghai with the exquisite Nanxiang Steamed Bun, more popularly known as Xiaolongbao. Originating from the Jiangnan region of China, these delicate buns are a culinary delight that wraps up a savory filling in a soft, pillowy dough. Steamed to perfection in traditional bamboo baskets, they offer a burst of flavor with every bite, making it a beloved dish in Chinese cuisine.
Servings: 15-20 buns
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 2 cups
- Active dry yeast
- 2 teaspoons
- Sugar
- 1 tablespoon
- Warm water
- 3/4 cup
- Ground pork
- 1 lb
- Green onions
- 3, finely chopped
- Soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons
- Sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons
- Ginger
- 1 tablespoon, grated
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, and sugar. Gradually add the warm water while stirring continuously until a dough forms.
- Transfer the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until it is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until its size doubles.
- In the meantime, prepare the filling. In a separate bowl, combine the ground pork, finely chopped green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, grated ginger, and salt.
- After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into small equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into a circle.
- Spoon a portion of the pork filling onto the center of each dough circle. Gather the edges of the dough around the filling and pinch them together at the top to seal the bun.
- Place the buns in a bamboo steamer, ensuring there's adequate space between each one. Cover the steamer and let the buns rest for about 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, fill a wok or large pot with a few inches of water and bring it to a boil. Place the steamer over the boiling water and steam the buns for about 15 minutes, until they puff up and the filling is thoroughly cooked.
- Serve the Nanxiang Steamed Buns hot, accompanied by soy sauce for dipping. Enjoy this delightful taste of Chinese tradition!
