Savory Onion and Cheddar Biscuits
These delightful savory biscuits are bursting with the rich flavors of caramelized onions and sharp cheddar cheese. Perfectly flaky and golden, they make an irresistible side dish for soups, stews, or a hearty breakfast spread. Biscuits have a long-standing history in American cuisine, with roots tracing back to the early settlers who relied on simple, hearty ingredients. These biscuits are not just a treat for the taste buds; they also evoke a sense of comfort and nostalgia at every bite.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 2 cups
- Baking powder
- 1 tablespoon
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup, cold and cubed
- Milk
- 3/4 cup, cold
- Cheddar cheese
- 1 cup, shredded
- Onion
- 1 medium, finely chopped
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- Add the finely chopped onion and shredded cheddar cheese to the flour mixture. Stir gently to incorporate.
- Cut the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingers until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Pour in the cold milk and stir until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it just a few times until smooth.
- Roll out the dough to a thickness of about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) and use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving warm.
Tips
- For an extra kick, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or some chopped fresh herbs like chives or parsley.
- These biscuits are best served fresh but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven to regain their crispiness.
