Indulge in the warm, inviting aroma of freshly baked focaccia bread, topped with caramelized onions and fragrant thyme. This Italian classic, known for its airy texture and delicious flavor, is perfect as an appetizer, side dish, or even a light meal. Focaccia has its roots in ancient Roman times, where it was often baked on hot stones, making it a beloved staple in Italian cuisine that has stood the test of time. Enjoy this delightful bread fresh from the oven, paired with a drizzle of olive oil for dipping or alongside your favorite soups and salads.
Ingredients
- All-purpose flour
- 4 cups
- Warm water
- 1 1/2 cups (between 100°f - 110°f)
- Active dry yeast
- 2 teaspoons
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Sea salt
- to taste (for topping)
- Fresh thyme leaves
- 2 tablespoons
- Onion
- 1 large, thinly sliced
- Olive oil
- 1/4 cup, plus extra for drizzling
Instructions
- In a small bowl, dissolve the active dry yeast in warm water and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture along with 1/4 cup of olive oil.
- Mix until a sticky dough forms. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Once risen, punch down the dough gently and transfer it to a greased baking sheet. Press and stretch the dough into a rectangular shape, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Evenly distribute the thinly sliced onions over the surface of the dough. Sprinkle the fresh thyme leaves and drizzle additional olive oil over the top. Finish with a sprinkle of sea salt.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, then slice and serve warm.
Tips
- For a richer flavor, consider caramelizing the onions before adding them to the dough.
- You can also experiment with different herbs, such as rosemary or oregano, to customize the flavor.
- Serve the focaccia with a bowl of balsamic vinegar mixed with olive oil for dipping.
