Hearty Pea and Ham Soup
Immerse yourself in the warmth of this delightful Hearty Pea and Ham Soup, a soul-satisfying dish that combines tender green split peas, savory diced ham, and a medley of aromatic vegetables. This traditional recipe has roots in various cultures where legumes were a staple, providing nourishment and comfort during colder months. With each spoonful, experience a delightful blend of flavors that evokes feelings of home and hearth, making it perfect for family gatherings or cozy nights in.
Instructions
- Rinse the split peas under cold water and set aside.
- In a large pot over medium heat, add the ham bone, diced onion, carrots, celery, and minced garlic. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, or until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
- Add the rinsed split peas, diced ham, chicken broth, bay leaf, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for about 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the peas are soft and the soup has thickened.
- Once cooked, carefully remove the ham bone from the soup. If there is any meat left on the bone, shred it off and return the meat to the soup.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
- Serve the soup hot, optionally with crusty bread or fresh herbs sprinkled on top for added flavor and presentation.
Tips
- For an extra depth of flavor, consider adding a splash of Worcestershire sauce or hot sauce for a kick.
- You can also add diced potatoes for a heartier texture, or blend a portion of the soup for a creamier consistency.
