Peach Compote
This delightful peach compote captures the essence of summer with its sweet and tangy flavor profile. Made from ripe, juicy peaches, this versatile fruit sauce is infused with warm cinnamon and a hint of vanilla, making it the perfect complement to ice cream, pancakes, or yogurt. A beloved recipe with historical roots dating back to the times of preserved fruits, this compote brings a touch of nostalgia and homestyle cooking to your table.
Ingredients
- Peaches
- 4 cups, sliced (about 4-5 medium peaches)
- Granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup
- Lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons
- Water
- 1/4 cup
- Vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon
- Ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the sliced peaches, granulated sugar, lemon juice, water, vanilla extract, and ground cinnamon.
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally to dissolve the sugar.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes. Stir occasionally, until the peaches are tender and the sauce has thickened to your desired consistency.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the compote to cool slightly before serving. It can be served warm or chilled.
Tips
- For a spicier twist, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg or a splash of bourbon during simmering.
- This compote can easily be made with other fruits as well, such as nectarines or apricots, for a unique flavor.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to one week.
