Homemade Peach Preserve
This Homemade Peach Preserve is a delightful, southern-style recipe that captures the essence of summer in a jar. Each spoonful of this luscious preserve is bursting with the sweet and tangy flavor of fresh succulent peaches, with a hint of tartness from the lemon juice. It's the perfect addition to toast, a glaze for meats, or a filling for pastries.
Ingredients
- Fresh ripe peaches
- 4 cups, peeled, pitted and chopped
- Granulated sugar
- 3 cups
- Fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 cup
- Fruit pectin
- 1 package (1.75 ounces)
Instructions
- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, combine the chopped peaches, sugar, and lemon juice. Mix well so that the peaches are coated with sugar and lemon juice.
- Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to allow the sugar to dissolve and the flavors to meld together.
- Place the pot over medium-high heat and bring the mixture to a boil, stirring occasionally to prevent the sugar from scorching at the bottom of the pot.
- Once the mixture starts boiling, stir in the fruit pectin. Continue to boil for 1 minute, stirring constantly to ensure the pectin is fully dissolved.
- Remove the pot from the heat and let the jam cool for about 5 minutes. This will help thicken the jam.
- Ladle the jam into sterilized jars, leaving a 1/4-inch headspace at the top. This allows for proper sealing.
- Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth and seal with lids.
- Process the jars in a boiling water bath for 10 minutes to sanitize and seal the jars.
- Remove the jars from the water bath using a jar lifter and let them cool completely on a towel or rack before storing in a cool, dark place.
- Your homemade peach preserve can be stored for up to 1 year. Enjoy it with your breakfast toast or as a glaze for your favorite meats!
Tips
- For a smoother preserve, you can use a hand blender or immersion blender to puree the mixture before adding the pectin.
- Try adding a teaspoon of vanilla extract or a pinch of cinnamon for a unique flavor twist.
- Make sure to use ripe but firm peaches for the best flavor and texture.
- Always use fresh lemon juice as it helps in setting the jam and balancing the sweetness.
