Ingredients

Original recipe serves 4

Lamb or chicken
1 pound, cut into strips
Olive oil
3 tablespoons
Garlic
3 cloves, minced
Lemon juice
2 tablespoons
Dried oregano
1 tablespoon
Salt
1 teaspoon
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon
Tzatziki sauce
1 cup
Tomatoes
2, sliced
Onions
1, thinly sliced
Pita bread
4 pieces

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the olive oil, minced garlic, lemon juice, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper to create a flavorful marinade.
  2. Add the lamb or chicken strips to the marinade, ensuring they're well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour (up to 8 hours for more flavor).
  3. Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
  4. Remove the meat from the marinade and grill or cook in the skillet for about 5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through. Ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) for chicken or 145°F (63°C) for lamb.
  5. While the meat is cooking, warm the pita bread in the oven or on the grill for a few seconds, until soft and pliable.
  6. Spread a generous amount of tzatziki sauce over each warm pita. Top with the grilled meat, sliced tomatoes, and onions.
  7. Fold the pita over the fillings, wrap in parchment paper or foil if desired, and serve immediately.

Tips

  • 💡 For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the marinade.
  • 💡 Feel free to customize your gyros with additional toppings such as lettuce, feta cheese, or olives.
  • 💡 Serve with a side of Greek salad for a complete meal.
