Experience the delightful crunch and succulent filling of these crispy prawn wontons. Each bite will introduce you to a burst of savory flavors, from the juicy prawns and aromatic garlic, to the spicy ginger and fresh green onions. Traditionally enjoyed during the Chinese New Year, these little bundles of joy represent prosperity and are a staple in Chinese cuisine. They are deep-fried to perfection, resulting in a golden, crispy exterior that perfectly complements the tender, flavorful filling.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Vegetable oil
enough for deep frying
Water
as needed, for sealing wonton wrappers
Wonton wrappers
40 pieces
Sesame oil
1 tablespoon
Soy sauce
2 tablespoons
Green onions
2, finely chopped
Ginger
1 inch, peeled and finely grated
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Prawns
200 grams, peeled, deveined and finely chopped
Sweet chili sauce
for dipping

Instructions

  1. In a food processor, combine the prawns, garlic, ginger, green onions, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Pulse until well combined but still slightly chunky. This will help to create a filling with a bit of texture.
  2. Lay out a wonton wrapper on a clean surface. Place a small spoonful of the prawn mixture in the center of the wrapper. Dip your finger in water and moisten the edges of the wrapper.
  3. Fold the wrapper in half to form a triangle, pressing the edges to seal. Make sure the edges are sealed well to prevent the filling from leaking out while frying. Repeat this process with the remaining wrappers and filling.
  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or pot over medium heat. The oil should be hot enough that a small piece of wonton wrapper sizzles upon contact.
  5. Fry the wontons in batches until they are golden brown and crispy. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side. Be careful not to overcrowd the pan to ensure even cooking.
  6. Remove the wontons with a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Serve the prawn wontons hot, accompanied by sweet chili sauce for dipping. Enjoy as they are or pair with a refreshing cucumber salad for a complete meal.
