St. Louis-Style Provel Cheese Pizza
Indulge in this culinary gem from the heart of St. Louis! This pizza, famous for its ultra-thin crust, is generously topped with a layer of unique, creamy, and slightly smoky Provel cheese. This cheese, a signature of St. Louis, is a delightful blend of cheddar, Swiss, and provolone. The pizza is seasoned to perfection with a medley of Italian seasonings, making this dish a fusion of Italian tradition and American innovation.
Ingredients
- Pizza dough
- 1 ball (about 1 pound)
- Olive oil
- 1 tablespoon
- Pizza sauce
- 1/2 cup
- Italian seasoning
- 1 teaspoon
- Garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Provel cheese
- 1.5 cups, shredded
- Salt
- 1/4 teaspoon, or to taste
- Black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon, or to taste
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven while it preheats.
- On a floured surface, roll out the pizza dough to your desired thickness. For a traditional St. Louis-style pizza, aim for a very thin crust.
- Carefully transfer the rolled out dough to a pizza peel or an inverted baking sheet. Lightly brush the dough with olive oil.
- Spread the pizza sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border for the crust. Sprinkle the Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder over the sauce.
- Evenly distribute the shredded Provel cheese over the sauce. Season the pizza with salt and pepper to taste.
- Carefully slide the pizza from the peel or baking sheet onto the preheated pizza stone in the oven. If you don't have a pizza stone, you can bake the pizza directly on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbly and slightly browned. Keep a close eye on the pizza during the final few minutes of baking to avoid over-browning the cheese.
- Remove the pizza from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the cheese to set a bit and makes the pizza easier to slice.
Tips
- Provel cheese, while popular in St. Louis, may be hard to find in other areas. If you can't locate it, substitute with an equal blend of shredded cheddar, Swiss, and provolone cheeses.
