Authentic Indian Rotis
Rotis are traditional Indian flatbreads made with whole wheat flour, cherished for their wholesome flavor and soft texture. These versatile flatbreads are a staple in Indian households, often enjoyed with a variety of curries, dals, and vegetables. The process of making rotis is an age-old tradition that brings families together, reflecting the rich culinary heritage of India. Serving them warm, brushed with ghee, elevates the experience, making each bite a delightful combination of taste and comfort.
Ingredients
- Whole wheat flour
- 2 cups
- Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Water
- 3/4 cup (or as needed)
- Ghee or oil
- 2 tablespoons (for brushing)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt thoroughly.
- Gradually add water, a little at a time, while kneading the dough with your hands until it becomes smooth and elastic. This should take about 8-10 minutes.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes to allow the gluten to develop.
- Divide the rested dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball (approximately 1.5 inches in diameter).
- On a lightly floured surface, roll each ball into a thin, round roti using a rolling pin, making sure to keep the edges even.
- Heat a tawa or griddle over medium heat until it's hot but not smoking.
- Place a roti on the hot tawa and cook for about 30 seconds, or until bubbles start to form on the surface.
- Flip the roti using tongs and cook for another 30 seconds, or until brown spots appear on the underside.
- Press gently with a clean cloth or spatula to help the roti puff up.
- Remove the roti from the tawa and brush it with ghee or oil for added flavor and richness.
- Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls, keeping the cooked rotis warm in a covered container until ready to serve.
Tips
- For a richer flavor, use homemade ghee instead of store-bought.
- You can add finely chopped herbs like cilantro or spinach to the dough for a flavorful twist.
- If you prefer your rotis softer, cover them with a damp cloth immediately after cooking.
