Ingredients

Original recipe serves 4

Basmati rice
1 cup
Saffron threads
1/4 teaspoon
Water
2 cups
Butter
2 tablespoons
Onion
1 medium, finely chopped
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Cumin powder
1 teaspoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
Black pepper
1/4 teaspoon, freshly ground
Cilantro
2 tablespoons, chopped (for garnish)
Lemon juice
1 tablespoon (optional, for added brightness)

Instructions

  1. Start by rinsing the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and ensures fluffy rice.
  2. In a small bowl, soak the saffron threads in 2 tablespoons of warm water for at least 10 minutes to release their color and flavor.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing until the onion turns translucent and fragrant.
  4. Stir in the cumin powder, salt, and black pepper, cooking for an additional minute to awaken the spices.
  5. Add the rinsed basmati rice to the saucepan and stir to coat the grains with the aromatic butter and spices.
  6. Pour in the saffron water along with the soaked saffron threads, mixing well to ensure each grain is infused with saffron’s golden color.
  7. Add 2 cups of water to the saucepan and bring the mixture to a boil.
  8. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan, and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
  9. After cooking, fluff the saffron rice gently with a fork and garnish with chopped cilantro. Drizzle with lemon juice, if using, for a touch of brightness before serving.

Tips

  • 💡 For a nuttier flavor, consider toasting the basmati rice in the butter for a few minutes before adding the water.
  • 💡 You can also add a pinch of turmeric for extra color and a subtle earthy flavor.
  • 💡 This saffron rice pairs beautifully with grilled chicken, lamb, or a hearty vegetable curry.
