Sardinhas Assadas

Sardinhas Assadas is a beloved traditional Portuguese dish that celebrates the vibrant coastal flavors of Portugal. These grilled sardines, marinated in a zesty blend of olive oil, garlic, and fresh lemon juice, deliver a mouthwatering experience that is both simple and satisfying. With a slight char from the grill, they embody the essence of summer, bringing the taste of the Mediterranean right to your table. Perfectly paired with roasted potatoes or a refreshing salad, this dish is not just a meal; it’s a culinary journey steeped in history, as sardines have been a staple in Portuguese cuisine for centuries.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • Fresh sardines (8-10, cleaned and scaled)
  • Olive oil (1/4 cup)
  • Garlic (4 cloves, minced)
  • Lemon juice (2 tablespoons, freshly squeezed)
  • Salt (1 teaspoon)
  • Black pepper (1/2 teaspoon, freshly ground)
  • Fresh parsley (1/4 cup, finely chopped (for garnish))

Instructions

  1. Preheat the grill or oven to medium-high heat (around 400°F or 200°C).
  2. Clean the sardines by removing the scales and guts, then rinse them gently under cold water.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil, minced garlic, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper to create a flavorful marinade.
  4. Place the cleaned sardines in a shallow dish and pour the marinade over them, ensuring they are well coated. Allow them to marinate for about 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
  5. Carefully place the marinated sardines on the grill or a baking sheet if using the oven. Grill or roast for approximately 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are cooked through and show a lovely char.
  6. Once cooked, remove the sardines from the grill or oven and sprinkle them with finely chopped fresh parsley for a burst of color and flavor.
  7. Serve the Sardinhas Assadas hot, accompanied by a side of roasted potatoes or a crisp salad to balance the dish.
