Classic British Sausage Rolls
Savor the taste of Britain with these scrumptious Sausage Rolls. Perfect for any gathering or just a cozy night in, they feature a juicy, seasoned sausage filling wrapped in a beautifully golden and flaky puff pastry. The aroma of the cooked sausage combined with the buttery pastry will make your kitchen smell like a London bakery. Originally introduced by the Romans in Britain, sausage rolls have become a staple in British cuisine, often enjoyed during holidays and parties.
Ingredients
- Salt
- 1 teaspoon
- Black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Egg
- 1, beaten
- Garlic
- 2 cloves, finely minced
- Onion
- 1 medium, finely chopped
- Sausage meat
- 500 grams
- Puff pastry
- 1 sheet, thawed
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (180°C fan) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a large rectangle about 1/4 inch thick.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the sausage meat, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix well until the ingredients are evenly distributed.
- Shape the sausage mixture into a log and place it down the center of the rolled-out pastry.
- Brush the edges of the pastry with half of the beaten egg.
- Fold the pastry over the sausage meat, pressing the edges together to seal. You should now have a long sausage roll.
- Cut the roll into 2-inch slices, then arrange them on the prepared baking tray.
- Brush the tops of the sausage rolls with the remaining beaten egg to give them a golden finish.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and the sausage meat is cooked through.
- Allow the sausage rolls to cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature.
Tips
- For a vegetarian version, replace the sausage meat with a mixture of lentils, breadcrumbs, and sautéed vegetables.
- Try adding some herbs like sage or thyme to the sausage meat for additional flavor.
- These sausage rolls can be frozen before baking and can be baked from frozen, just add a few extra minutes to the baking time.
