Relish the rich, robust flavors of this Italian Sausage sandwich. Each bite is a delicious symphony of juicy grilled Italian sausages, sweet caramelized onions, and vibrant bell peppers, all nestled within a perfectly toasted hoagie roll. The sandwich is further elevated with the creamy mayonnaise, tangy Dijon mustard, and delicately melted Provolone cheese. This recipe is a fantastic homage to Italian-American street food, offering a gourmet twist to the classic sausage and peppers sandwich found in many Italian festivals and street fairs across the U.S.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Italian sausages
4
Olive oil
2 tablespoons
Onion
1, thinly sliced
Bell peppers
2, thinly sliced
Salt and pepper
to taste
Hoagie rolls
4
Dijon mustard
4 teaspoons
Mayonnaise
4 teaspoons
Provolone cheese
4 slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat your grill to medium-high heat.
  2. Grill the Italian sausages for about 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are evenly browned and cooked through.
  3. While the sausages are grilling, heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
  4. Add the thinly sliced onions and bell peppers to the skillet. Season with salt and pepper, and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
  5. Slice the hoagie rolls in half lengthwise, and lightly toast them on the grill or in a toaster oven.
  6. Spread a teaspoon each of Dijon mustard on one side of the roll and mayonnaise on the other side.
  7. Place a slice of provolone cheese on the bottom half of each roll.
  8. Place a grilled sausage on top of the cheese.
  9. Generously top the sausages with the caramelized onions and bell peppers.
  10. Top with the other half of the roll and serve the sandwiches warm.
