Scalloped Potatoes with Ham

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with this rich and creamy Scalloped Potatoes with Ham. This classic dish combines layers of tender potatoes and savory ham, all enveloped in a luscious cheese sauce that bubbles and browns to perfection. Perfect for family gatherings or a cozy weeknight dinner, this recipe is a nod to the traditional American cuisine that has warmed hearts and homes for generations.

Ingredients

Potatoes
4 large, peeled and thinly sliced
Cooked ham
2 cups, diced
Unsalted butter
4 tablespoons
All-purpose flour
1/4 cup
Milk
2 cups
Cheddar cheese
2 cups, shredded
Salt
to taste
Pepper
to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Follow with half of the diced ham.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour until smooth and bubbly.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while continuously stirring, bringing the mixture to a boil. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the first layer of potatoes and ham in the baking dish.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce, ensuring the top layer is generously coated with cheese sauce.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  9. After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Allow the dish to cool for a few minutes before serving, as the sauce will thicken slightly upon standing.

Tips

  • 💡 For added flavor, consider incorporating diced onions or garlic into the layers.
  • 💡 Feel free to swap out cheddar for your favorite cheese such as Gruyère or Monterey Jack for a different flavor profile.
  • 💡 This dish can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator before baking. Just add an extra 10-15 minutes to the cooking time if baking straight from the fridge.
