Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. Layer half of the sliced potatoes evenly in the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Follow with half of the diced ham.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in the flour until smooth and bubbly.
  4. Gradually pour in the milk while continuously stirring, bringing the mixture to a boil. Cook for about 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly until the sauce thickens.
  5. Reduce the heat to low and stir in the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. Pour half of the cheese sauce over the first layer of potatoes and ham in the baking dish.
  7. Repeat the layers with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce, ensuring the top layer is generously coated with cheese sauce.
  8. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes.
  9. After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.
  10. Allow the dish to cool for a few minutes before serving, as the sauce will thicken slightly upon standing.
