Authentic Sicilian Calzone

Experience a taste of Italy with this authentic Sicilian Calzone recipe. This delightful folded pizza, oozing with melty mozzarella, ricotta and parmesan cheese, is packed with savory Italian sausage and healthy spinach. Originating from Sicily, this dish is a delicious twist on traditional pizza that delivers a satisfying explosion of flavors with every bite.

Ingredients

Olive oil
1 tablespoon
Salt
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
Black pepper
1/2 teaspoon, or to taste
Egg
1, beaten
Spinach
1 cup, cooked and squeezed dry
Italian sausage
1/2 pound, cooked and crumbled
Parmesan cheese
1/4 cup, grated
Mozzarella cheese
1 cup, shredded
Ricotta cheese
1 cup
Pizza dough
1 pound

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C).
  2. Lightly dust your work surface with flour. Roll out the pizza dough into a 12-inch circle.
  3. On one half of the dough, evenly spread the ricotta cheese, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge.
  4. Top the ricotta with the mozzarella, Parmesan, cooked sausage, and spinach. Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges to seal tightly, ensuring no filling leaks out.
  6. Transfer the calzone to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Brush the top of the calzone with the beaten egg and drizzle a little olive oil over it for extra crispness.
  8. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the calzone is golden brown and crispy.
  9. Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 5 minutes before slicing and serving. This allows the cheese to set and makes it easier to slice.

Tips

  • 💡 For a vegetarian variation, you can replace the Italian sausage with mushrooms or bell peppers. You can also add a touch of garlic to the filling for an extra flavor boost.
