Instructions
- Cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes. This size is perfect for ensuring a crispy exterior and a soft, creamy interior.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium-high heat. You want enough oil so that the tofu pieces can be fully submerged.
- Carefully place the tofu pieces into the hot oil. Fry them until they're golden brown and crispy on all sides, which should take about 3-5 minutes.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the tofu pieces from the oil. Drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
- While the tofu is draining, prepare the sauce. In a bowl, mix together the soy sauce, chili sauce, minced garlic, and half of the chopped green onions. This spicy-tangy mixture will be absorbed by the hot tofu, infusing it with flavor.
- Toss the fried tofu in the sauce until they're well coated. Make sure each piece is thoroughly covered for maximum flavor.
- Serve the stinky tofu hot, garnished with the remaining chopped green onions. For an authentic street food experience, use wooden skewers to eat them!
Tips
- For an even more authentic experience, look for fermented tofu in Asian markets. It has a stronger aroma and flavor, which is characteristic of stinky tofu.
- Adjust the amount of chili sauce according to your spice tolerance.
- You can also serve the stinky tofu with a side of pickled vegetables for a refreshing contrast.
