Ingredients

Original recipe serves 8

Vanilla extract
1 teaspoon
Evaporated milk
1 cup
Condensed milk
1 can (14 ounces)
Eggs
3 large
Water
1/4 cup
Granulated sugar
1 cup

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat the granulated sugar over medium-low heat. Stir continuously until the sugar melts and turns a golden color to create the caramel sauce.
  3. Carefully pour the hot caramel syrup into a 9-inch round baking dish, ensuring to coat the bottom and sides evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract until you achieve a smooth, well-blended mixture.
  5. Pour this egg and milk mixture over the cooled caramel layer in the baking dish.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for approximately 60 minutes, or until the flan is set.
  7. Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool completely. Once fully cooled, carefully invert the flan onto a serving plate.
  8. Serve chilled for the most authentic experience. Enjoy this sweet slice of Spanish tradition!

Tips

  • 💡 Be patient when melting the sugar. It takes a bit of time but rushing it could result in burnt caramel.
  • 💡 The flan is perfectly cooked when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • 💡 For a citrusy twist, add some lemon or orange zest to the flan mixture.
