Indulge in the rich, creamy goodness of this Spinach and Gouda Gratin, a side dish that elevates any meal to gourmet status. The luscious blend of sautéed garlic, tender spinach, and melted Gouda creates a symphony of flavors, while the golden, buttery breadcrumb topping adds a satisfying crunch. This dish not only captivates the taste buds but also offers a comforting embrace, making it a beloved classic in many kitchens. Historically, gratins trace back to the French cuisine, where they were used as a way to combine leftovers into a delicious, baked dish.
Ingredients
- Butter
- 2 tablespoons, plus extra for greasing
- Breadcrumbs
- 1 cup, preferably homemade or panko
- Salt
- 1/2 teaspoon
- Black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon
- Garlic
- 2 cloves, minced
- Heavy cream
- 1 cup
- Gouda cheese
- 1 1/2 cups, grated
- Spinach
- 10 ounces, fresh
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Grease a medium baking dish with butter and set aside.
- Thoroughly wash the spinach and remove any tough stems. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and blanch the spinach for 1-2 minutes. Drain and squeeze out any excess water, then chop the spinach coarsely.
- In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until hot but not boiling. Stir in the minced garlic, salt, and pepper, allowing the flavors to meld for about 2 minutes.
- Add the chopped spinach to the cream mixture, stirring until well combined. Remove from heat.
- Transfer the spinach mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Sprinkle the grated Gouda cheese generously over the top of the spinach layer.
- In a small bowl, mix together the breadcrumbs and melted butter until the breadcrumbs are well-coated. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy this gratin as a delightful side dish to accompany your favorite main courses!
Tips
- For an extra flavor boost, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg to the cream mixture.
- You can substitute Gouda with other cheeses like Gruyère or Fontina for a different flavor profile.
- If you prefer a lighter version, you can use half-and-half instead of heavy cream.
