Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • Cabbage (1 large head)
  • Ground beef (1 pound)
  • Cooked rice (1 cup)
  • Onion (1 medium, finely chopped)
  • Garlic (2 cloves, minced)
  • Egg (1, beaten)
  • Bread crumbs (1/2 cup)
  • Fresh parsley (1/4 cup, chopped)
  • Salt (1 teaspoon)
  • Black pepper (1/2 teaspoon)
  • Beef broth (2 cups)
  • Tomato sauce (2 cups)

Instructions

  1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage, then place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the outer leaves are tender. Remove the cabbage from the water and let it cool slightly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, beaten egg, bread crumbs, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  3. Once the cabbage has cooled, carefully peel off the outer leaves, ensuring they remain intact. Trim the thick center vein from each leaf to make them easier to roll.
  4. Take a cabbage leaf and place a generous spoonful of the ground beef mixture in the center. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling and roll it up tightly, tucking the ends in to prevent the filling from escaping. Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling.
  5. In a large pot, combine the tomato sauce and beef broth. Layer the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in the pot. Pour any remaining sauce over the rolls.
  6. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer over medium heat. Cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Cook for 1 hour and 30 minutes, or until the cabbage rolls are tender and the flavors have melded beautifully.
  7. Serve the stuffed cabbage rolls hot, spooning additional tomato sauce over the top for a burst of flavor.
