Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, allspice, salt, and pepper. Thoroughly mix until well combined.
- Shape the mixture into small, round meatballs, each about 1 inch in diameter.
- Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, approximately 10 minutes.
- Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside. Keep the skillet on the burner.
- In the same skillet, add the flour, stirring continuously for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring a smooth mixture. Bring the broth to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet, allowing them to simmer in the gravy until the sauce has thickened and the meatballs are fully cooked, about 15 minutes.
- Stir in the sour cream, and season with additional salt and pepper if desired.
- To serve, spoon a generous amount of meatballs and sauce into each hot dog bun. Enjoy your Swedish Meatball Subs!
Tips
- For a creamy and tangy twist, consider adding a spoonful of lingonberry jam to the sub, a Swedish staple often paired with meatballs.
- You can also make the meatballs in advance and freeze them. Just defrost and heat up in the skillet when you're ready to enjoy.
