Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, finely chopped onion, allspice, salt, and pepper. Thoroughly mix until well combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into small, round meatballs, each about 1 inch in diameter.
  3. Heat the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Once melted, add the meatballs and cook until browned on all sides, approximately 10 minutes.
  4. Remove the meatballs from the skillet and set aside. Keep the skillet on the burner.
  5. In the same skillet, add the flour, stirring continuously for 1 minute. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring a smooth mixture. Bring the broth to a simmer.
  6. Return the meatballs to the skillet, allowing them to simmer in the gravy until the sauce has thickened and the meatballs are fully cooked, about 15 minutes.
  7. Stir in the sour cream, and season with additional salt and pepper if desired.
  8. To serve, spoon a generous amount of meatballs and sauce into each hot dog bun. Enjoy your Swedish Meatball Subs!

Tips

  • 💡 For a creamy and tangy twist, consider adding a spoonful of lingonberry jam to the sub, a Swedish staple often paired with meatballs.
  • 💡 You can also make the meatballs in advance and freeze them. Just defrost and heat up in the skillet when you're ready to enjoy.
