Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant and golden.
- Add the chopped Swiss chard leaves to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until wilted and tender.
- Sprinkle the flour over the wilted Swiss chard and stir well to coat the leaves evenly.
- Gradually pour in the milk while stirring constantly. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-4 minutes.
- Remove the skillet from heat and stir in the grated Gouda cheese until it melts and is well incorporated into the mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Transfer the Swiss chard and cheese mixture to a greased baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
- Evenly sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top of the gratin to create a crispy topping.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving, letting the flavors meld beautifully.
Tips
- For added flavor, consider mixing in some sautéed onions or shallots with the Swiss chard.
- You can substitute Gouda with Gruyère or a sharp cheddar for a different flavor profile.
- If you like a bit of spice, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the cheese mixture.
