Servings: 8

Ingredients

Olive oil
2 tablespoons
Onion
1, medium, chopped
Garlic
2 cloves, minced
Swiss chard
4 cups, chopped
Bread
6 cups, cubed (preferably stale or day-old)
Gruyere cheese
2 cups, grated
Milk
2 cups
Eggs
6, large
Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons
Salt
1 teaspoon
Pepper
1/2 teaspoon

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the chopped Swiss chard and cook until wilted, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
  5. In the prepared baking dish, layer half of the bread cubes evenly across the bottom.
  6. Top with half of the Swiss chard mixture and half of the grated Gruyere cheese.
  7. Repeat the layering process with the remaining bread, Swiss chard, and cheese.
  8. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper until well combined.
  9. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the layered bread, Swiss chard, and cheese in the baking dish.
  10. Gently press down on the layers to ensure the bread absorbs the egg mixture.
  11. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and allow it to sit for 15 minutes for the bread to soak up the liquid.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes.
  13. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the strata is set.
  14. Let it cool for a few minutes before slicing into portions and serving warm.
