Servings: 8

Ingredients

Vanilla ice cream
to serve
Puff pastry
1 sheet, enough to cover a 9-inch skillet
Unsalted butter
1/2 cup (1 stick)
Granulated sugar
1 cup
Apples
5-6, peeled, cored and halved

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a 9-inch oven-safe skillet, melt the butter over medium heat until it begins to froth.
  3. Sprinkle in the granulated sugar and stir gently until it dissolves into the butter and forms a golden caramel, usually about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Take the skillet off the heat and carefully arrange your peeled, cored, and halved apples cut side down in the caramel. The apples should fit snugly.
  5. Return your skillet to medium heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes. This allows your apples to soften and start absorbing the caramel flavor.
  6. Lay your puff pastry sheet over the softened apples, tucking in the edges into the skillet.
  7. Transfer your skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up, golden, and crispy.
  8. Remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. This allows the caramel to thicken slightly.
  9. To serve, carefully invert the tart onto a serving plate so the beautiful caramelized apples are on top. Be careful as the caramel will be hot.
  10. Slice into generous portions and serve warm with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream.
