Servings: 8
Ingredients
- Vanilla ice cream
- to serve
- Puff pastry
- 1 sheet, enough to cover a 9-inch skillet
- Unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup (1 stick)
- Granulated sugar
- 1 cup
- Apples
- 5-6, peeled, cored and halved
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a 9-inch oven-safe skillet, melt the butter over medium heat until it begins to froth.
- Sprinkle in the granulated sugar and stir gently until it dissolves into the butter and forms a golden caramel, usually about 5-7 minutes.
- Take the skillet off the heat and carefully arrange your peeled, cored, and halved apples cut side down in the caramel. The apples should fit snugly.
- Return your skillet to medium heat and cook for an additional 5 minutes. This allows your apples to soften and start absorbing the caramel flavor.
- Lay your puff pastry sheet over the softened apples, tucking in the edges into the skillet.
- Transfer your skillet to the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up, golden, and crispy.
- Remove the skillet from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. This allows the caramel to thicken slightly.
- To serve, carefully invert the tart onto a serving plate so the beautiful caramelized apples are on top. Be careful as the caramel will be hot.
- Slice into generous portions and serve warm with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream.
