Tau Hu Hap is a delightful steamed tofu dish that hails from the vibrant culinary traditions of Southeast Asia. This dish celebrates the delicate texture of firm tofu, which serves as a canvas for a medley of flavorful toppings. Shiitake mushrooms lend their earthy umami notes, while colorful julienned carrots and fresh green onions add a crisp texture and brightness. Drizzled with a savory sauce made from soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sesame oil, this dish not only offers a feast for the eyes but also a nourishing, plant-based meal that can bring families together during special occasions and celebrations. Perfectly paired with steamed rice, Tau Hu Hap is an elegant way to introduce the richness of plant-based cuisine to your dining table.

Servings: 4

Ingredients

Firm tofu
1 block, cut into rectangular pieces
Shiitake mushrooms
1 cup, sliced
Carrots
1 cup, julienned
Green onions
1/2 cup, chopped
Salt
1/2 teaspoon
White pepper
1/4 teaspoon
Sesame oil
1 tablespoon
Soy sauce
2 tablespoons
Oyster sauce
1 tablespoon
Cornstarch
1 tablespoon
Water
1/4 cup

Instructions

  1. Prepare your steaming setup by filling a pot with water and bringing it to a gentle simmer.
  2. While the water heats, cut the firm tofu into rectangular pieces and arrange them neatly on a steaming plate.
  3. Top the tofu with the sliced shiitake mushrooms, julienned carrots, and chopped green onions to create a colorful topping.
  4. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, water, salt, and white pepper until smooth to create a savory sauce.
  5. Carefully pour the sauce over the tofu and vegetable arrangement, ensuring even coverage.
  6. Place the steaming plate into the pot, cover, and steam the tofu dish for about 15-20 minutes, or until the tofu is heated through and the vegetables are tender.
  7. Once done, carefully remove the plate from the steamer and serve hot, ideally with a side of steamed rice to soak up the delicious sauce.
