Teh Tarik

Teh Tarik, meaning 'pulled tea' in Malay, is a beloved beverage steeped in the rich culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Singapore. This exquisite drink is known for its creamy texture and frothy top, created through the unique pouring technique that aerates the tea. The combination of robust black tea, sweet condensed milk, and rich evaporated milk creates a delightful balance of flavors that warms the soul. Often enjoyed in bustling kopitiams and street stalls, Teh Tarik is not just a drink; it's an experience that brings people together.

Serves 2

Ingredients

Water
4 cups
Black tea leaves
2 tablespoons
Condensed milk
2 tablespoons
Evaporated milk
1/4 cup
Sugar
2 tablespoons (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. In a pot, bring the 4 cups of water to a rolling boil.
  2. Once boiling, add the 2 tablespoons of black tea leaves. Allow it to boil for about 3-5 minutes to extract the robust flavor.
  3. Strain the tea leaves using a fine mesh strainer or a tea strainer, pouring the brewed tea into a large mug or pot.
  4. Incorporate the 2 tablespoons of condensed milk and 1/4 cup of evaporated milk into the hot tea. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is well combined and the condensed milk dissolves.
  5. To create the signature froth, 'pull' the tea by pouring it back and forth between the mug and a separate pot from a height of about 10 inches. Do this for about 5-10 times, being cautious as the tea is hot. This process aerates the tea and creates a lovely frothy top.
  6. Taste and add sugar as needed, stirring gently to combine.
  7. Serve the Teh Tarik hot in a mug, enjoying the rich aroma and inviting foam.

Tips

  • 💡 For an extra kick, consider adding a pinch of ground cardamom or a dash of vanilla extract while mixing the milk.
  • 💡 If you prefer a less sweet drink, reduce the amount of condensed milk or sugar to suit your taste.
  • 💡 Experiment with different types of tea for a unique flavor twist, such as using a spiced chai or a flavored black tea.
